Ok I must be the weirdest person alive but I absolutely and utterly love to iron. Even big bulky things like tablecloths and curtains and don’t get me started on a really complicated piece like a sofa slip-cover.
It started in my teens as I was never impressed with our housekeepers work. I wanted my clothes (and I had way too many) to be put orderly (to colour, category etc) away in my closet. It might sound very autistic but to me it has to do with practically. I want to quickly find things and if you know where you put things you’ll save time finding things. Anyway, I’m drifting off … So I started to put away my own clothes and quickly discovered that when things are ironed they look prettier, are flatter and you can pile them better.
But how do you find the time and energy? Well my secret is Netflix and YouTube. I can’t just sit still and watch TV as I find that a waste of time and I get bored. So I binge watch my favourite TV shows and in the meantime all my laundry is getting flat and neatly folded.
My second tip: do it straight away, don’t let it become a mountain! It’s the same with problem solving, fix it straight away as it will become a mountain of thoughts and you will dread it.
My third tip: buy good gear! This is with everything you do in life, invest in good equipment to make the job easier. Don’t go for a cheap ironer, invest in a good ironing board like the one I have from Brabantia that’s also pretty and tells you to be happy – that’s like a free bonus!
My fourth tip: don’t hide the ironing board! Have it accessible so that you can quickly grab it and get on with it. If it’s somewhere tucked away you’ll have to go through all the hassle of getting it and you might postpone it. I have it hanging on a hook in my laundry closet. It’s not only handy it looks cute too.
